One of the challenges many of my clients have is feeling overwhelmed with where to start when it comes to changing their relationship with food. Many people come with the all-or-nothing approach from the dieting mentality that they tend to have periods of doing really well followed by periods of falling off the wagon.
When it comes to overcoming binge eating and emotional eating, there are really many places you could start - should you change what you eat, how you eat, when you eat? Should you start with exercise? It can be overwhelming!
There’s a saying that goes “All Roads Leads to Rome,” which in your health journey means that really any place you start is a good starting point. In a coaching relationship, we assume that the client is the expert, because the best path forward is really the one that works for you and your lifestyle?
So should you do when you don’t know where to start? Here’s an exercise that can help:
STEP 1: Write down the goal/intention on top of your sheet
STEP 2: Grab a piece of paper and brain dump all potential ideas/steps that can help you towards your goal
STEP 3: Reading over the list, outline the following
The EASY step
The HARD/CHALLENGING step
The FUN step
The “MOST BANG-FOR-YOUR-BUCK” step
STEP 4: Read over the choices and then make a decision on what makes the most sense for you to start. You might find your step may be to gather more information.**
**One caveat of course is to set a deadline for when you’ll decide. For some people, researching is their way of avoiding taking action.**
The key really is to start and get the momentum going. As you continue, you’ll find it easier to add on new steps.
